What Gift Nifty can and cannot predict
Gift Nifty is a dollar-denominated Nifty 50 futures contract traded at NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, with sessions covering most of the day. Because it trades while Indian cash markets are closed, it absorbs overnight news from the US, Europe and Asia and is widely used to estimate the next morning's opening.
It is a good guide to the open, but a weak guide to the close. Domestic flows, results and sector news during the day frequently reverse an indicated gap. Treat it as a weather forecast for 9:15 am, not for 3:30 pm.
What to watch
- • GIFT Nifty trades nearly 21 hours a day, so it prices in overnight US and Asian moves before Indian cash markets open.
- • A GIFT Nifty premium or discount to Nifty spot is the market's expectation for the opening gap, not a guarantee.
- • US index futures, the dollar index, crude oil and USD/INR are the cues that usually explain that gap.
