What FII and DII flows tell you
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs, now formally FPIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs — mutual funds, insurers, pension funds) together account for a large part of daily cash-market turnover. The provisional figures released after the close show whether each group was a net buyer or seller in the cash segment that day.
Over the past several years, steady SIP inflows have made DIIs a powerful counterweight: on many days of heavy foreign selling, domestic funds have absorbed the supply. That is why a large FII outflow no longer guarantees a falling market.
How not to read the data
A single day's number is noisy. Block deals, index rebalancing and large IPO allotments can distort it. Trends over weeks are more meaningful, and the derivatives positions of foreign investors (index futures long/short ratio) often say more about short-term sentiment than cash flows alone.
Use flow data as context for why the market moved, not as a forecast of where it goes next.
What to watch
- • FII net buying usually supports large caps and the rupee; sustained selling pressures both.
- • DII flows (mutual funds and insurers) often absorb FII selling, which is why the index can hold up on heavy foreign outflows.
- • These are provisional cash-market numbers released after the close; final figures can differ slightly.
