Nithin Kamath Warns of Brokerage Revenue Impact as New Stock Market Timings Begin August 3
Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath says the new Closing Auction Session (CAS), effective August 3, could reduce brokerage revenue by up to 5% while changing how investors trade at the market close.

India's equity market will introduce a Closing Auction Session (CAS) from August 3, 2026, bringing significant changes to how stocks are traded during the final minutes of the trading day.
Zerodha Co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath believes the new system will improve price discovery but also make trading more complex for investors and could reduce brokerage revenue by 1% to 5%.
Key Highlights
- New Closing Auction Session (CAS) starts August 3
- Applicable to stocks with F&O contracts
- Zerodha expects a 1%–5% impact on brokerage revenue
- Different market segments will now close at different times
- CAS aims to improve closing price discovery
What Is the Closing Auction Session (CAS)?
The Closing Auction Session is a dedicated auction conducted at the end of the trading day for stocks that have Futures & Options (F&O) contracts.
Instead of determining the closing price using trades executed during the final minutes of trading, all buy and sell orders will be collected and matched through an auction mechanism to arrive at a single equilibrium closing price.
According to Nithin Kamath, similar auction-based closing systems are already used by major global exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE).
Why Is This Change Being Introduced?
The new framework is designed to improve the quality of closing prices by reducing the impact of large trades executed near market close.
The key objectives include
- Better price discovery
- Reduced influence of large institutional orders
- Lower chances of closing price manipulation
- Improved execution for passive index funds
New Market Closing Timings
From August 3, investors will notice different closing times for different market segments.
- Stocks with F&O contracts: Continuous trading ends at 3:15 PM, followed by the Closing Auction Session.
- Stocks without F&O contracts: Trading continues until 3:30 PM.
- Stock and Index Derivatives: Trading continues until 3:40 PM.
Why Is Zerodha Concerned?
Nithin Kamath said the biggest challenge may not be lower revenue but helping investors understand the revised trading schedule.
According to him, different market closing times could initially confuse retail investors and increase customer support queries.
He also estimated that the new system could reduce brokerage revenue by approximately 1% to 5%.
What This Means for Investors
The Closing Auction Session is expected to improve transparency and make closing prices more efficient, especially for institutional investors and index funds. However, retail investors should familiarize themselves with the revised market timings to avoid confusion while placing orders near market close.
