Sugar Stocks in Focus: Shares Rise Up to 6%

Sugar stocks witnessed strong momentum on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after the government introduced tighter stockholding limits amid elevated domestic sugar prices.

Among the major sugar companies, Dhampur Sugar Mills gained around 6%, while Dwarikesh Sugar Industries advanced about 6.3%. Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar rose around 5.3%, Shree Renuka Sugars gained about 4%, and Balrampur Chini Mills climbed around 3%.

The movement came as the government sought to manage sugar inventories ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Government Tightens Sugar Stockholding Rules

Under the revised rules, dealers purchasing more than 10 metric tonnes of sugar per month will be permitted to hold inventory for a maximum of 15 days.

The restrictions are scheduled to remain effective from September 1 to November 30, 2026.

The government will also monitor monthly sugar sales as part of its efforts to maintain adequate availability and control excessive inventory accumulation.

Sugar Prices Reach Elevated Levels

Domestic sugar prices have moved significantly higher in recent months.

Wholesale sugar prices have crossed approximately ₹6,000 per quintal in markets such as Kanpur and Kolkata.

Prices in the Muzaffarpur and Kolhapur regions have also remained above ₹5,000 per quintal.

The all-India average ex-mill sugar price has increased to around ₹5,400–₹5,500 per quintal, compared with approximately ₹3,900 a year earlier.

Retail sugar prices also rose around 13% year-on-year, reaching approximately ₹52.30 per kg on August 18, according to the data cited in the report.

Supply Concerns Ahead of the 2026-27 Sugar Season

The tighter inventory rules come as the industry prepares for the new sugar season beginning October 1, 2026.

Industry estimates suggest opening sugar stocks could be around 40–42 lakh tonnes, although some estimates are lower at approximately 32–35 lakh tonnes.

Domestic requirements are estimated at around 50 lakh tonnes.

Concerns over sugarcane production have also increased following patchy rainfall and dry weather conditions in some regions.

These factors have kept the sugar supply-demand balance under close observation.

Impact of Higher Sugar Prices on Sugar Mills

According to Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, the tighter demand-supply situation has contributed to higher sugar prices, which could support the operating environment for sugar mills.

He noted that some mills are holding inventory purchased at significantly lower prices of around ₹37 per kg, while current ex-factory realisations are around ₹54–₹55 per kg in Uttar Pradesh and approximately ₹46 per kg in Maharashtra.

The difference between inventory costs and current realisations could provide support to mill-level margins, although the industry's profitability remains sensitive to government policies and commodity prices.

Ethanol Business Also Remains Important

Sugar companies have increasingly diversified their operations through ethanol production.

However, ethanol prices have remained broadly unchanged over the past three years.

Higher sugar realisations could therefore help sugar mills manage some of the margin pressure arising from the ethanol segment, according to the analyst commentary cited in the report.

Companies in Focus

Dhampur Sugar Mills

Dhampur Sugar was among the strongest movers in the sugar segment on August 20, gaining around 6%.

The company's share-price movement came amid broader strength across sugar-related companies following the government's new stockholding restrictions.

Dwarikesh Sugar Industries

Dwarikesh Sugar Industries gained around 6.3%, making it one of the notable movers in the sector.

The broader sugar-price environment and expectations around supply availability remained important factors behind the sector-wide momentum.

Balrampur Chini Mills

Balrampur Chini Mills rose around 3% during the session.

The company was also highlighted in analyst commentary as one of the companies being closely watched within the sugar industry.

Shree Renuka Sugars

Shree Renuka Sugars advanced around 4%, adding to the broader rally across sugar stocks.

Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar

Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar gained approximately 5.3% as sugar-related stocks moved higher following the latest government measures.

Analyst View on Sugar Stocks

Sunny Agrawal of SBI Securities highlighted Balrampur Chini, Triveni Engineering and EID Parry as companies he prefers within the sugar segment.

However, the analyst also pointed to an important risk.

The government has permitted limited duty-free imports of up to 1 million tonnes of raw sugar. Additional government intervention could potentially moderate domestic sugar prices.

A decline in sugar prices could consequently affect the earnings environment for sugar mills.

Key Factors to Watch

  • Sugarcane production estimates
  • Opening inventory levels
  • Government stockholding restrictions
  • Sugar exports and imports
  • Ethanol pricing
  • Festive-season demand

  • Monsoon and rainfall conditions

The interaction between supply, demand and government policy is likely to remain important for sugar companies during the upcoming season.
