Bank of Baroda Q1FY27 Results: Profit Falls 72% on One-Time Settlement; Core Business Remains Strong

Bank of Baroda (BoB), one of India's leading public sector banks, reported its financial results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 (Q1FY27). While the headline numbers showed a sharp decline in net profit, the fall was primarily driven by a one-time legal settlement expense rather than weakness in the bank's underlying business.

The bank posted a standalone net profit (PAT) of ₹1,278.39 crore, compared to ₹4,541.36 crore in the corresponding quarter last year, representing a decline of nearly 72% year-on-year. Despite this, the bank delivered healthy growth in Net Interest Income (NII), deposits, advances, and continued to improve its asset quality, highlighting the resilience of its core banking operations.

Here's a detailed analysis of Bank of Baroda's Q1FY27 performance.

Q1FY27 Financial Highlights

Net Profit (PAT)

Bank of Baroda reported a standalone net profit of ₹1,278.39 crore, compared to ₹4,541.36 crore in Q1FY26.

This represents a 71.9% year-on-year decline, primarily due to a one-time exceptional expense incurred during the quarter.

One-Time Legal Settlement

The biggest factor impacting quarterly earnings was a one-time expense of ₹5,680.23 crore related to an out-of-court settlement with NMC Group, the UAE-based healthcare company.

Earlier this month, Bank of Baroda agreed to pay US$600 million to resolve years-long litigation linked to the collapse of NMC Health.

Importantly, this is a non-recurring expense, meaning it does not reflect the bank's day-to-day operating performance.

Total Income

The bank's total income increased 2.6% year-on-year to ₹36,681.09 crore, supported by healthy business growth across lending and deposit segments.

Net Interest Income (NII)

Net Interest Income (NII), which measures the difference between interest earned and interest paid, increased 9.5% year-on-year to ₹12,524 crore.

The growth reflects continued expansion of the bank's lending portfolio and stable interest income generation.

Net Interest Margin (NIM)

The bank reported a Net Interest Margin (NIM) of 2.77%, compared to 2.91% in the same quarter last year.

The slight decline was mainly due to higher funding costs and continued pressure on banking margins across the industry.

Operating Profit

Operating Profit before provisions and contingencies stood at ₹8,127.25 crore, marginally lower than the previous year, reflecting a 1.3% year-on-year decline.

Despite margin pressure, the bank maintained stable operating profitability.

Strong Growth in Business

Bank of Baroda continued to report healthy growth across both deposits and advances during the quarter.

Global Deposits

Global deposits increased 13.8% year-on-year to ₹16,33,559 crore.

Domestic Deposits

Domestic deposits grew 14.7% year-on-year to ₹13,81,535 crore, indicating strong customer confidence and a growing deposit franchise.

Global Advances

Global advances rose 17.4% year-on-year to ₹14,16,898 crore.

Domestic Advances

Domestic advances increased 16.1% year-on-year to ₹11,50,906 crore, reflecting healthy credit demand across key lending segments.

The consistent growth in both deposits and advances demonstrates the bank's ability to expand its balance sheet despite a challenging economic environment.

Asset Quality Continues to Improve

One of the strongest aspects of the quarter was continued improvement in the bank's asset quality.

Gross NPA

Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) declined to 1.99%, improving by 29 basis points compared to the same period last year.

Net NPA

Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) improved to 0.50%, compared to 0.60% in the previous year.

Lower NPA levels indicate better credit quality, disciplined lending practices, and improved recovery efforts.

Capital Adequacy

The bank's Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) stood at 16.30%.

Although this was 131 basis points lower than the previous year, it remains comfortably above regulatory requirements and provides sufficient capital to support future business expansion.

Strategic Business Updates

Apart from the quarterly results, Bank of Baroda also announced important strategic initiatives to strengthen its international operations.

Higher Overseas Borrowing Limit

The Board approved increasing the borrowing limit for overseas operations from US$5 billion to US$10 billion, providing greater financial flexibility for international business.

Green & ESG Bond Framework

The bank retained its US$4 billion Medium Term Note (MTN) Programme while introducing a new US$1 billion sub-limit for issuing Green and ESG Bonds through overseas operations, including IFSC Banking Units.

These initiatives are expected to diversify funding sources and support future international growth.

These factors will play a crucial role in determining the bank's long-term growth trajectory.

Final Thoughts

At first glance, Bank of Baroda's Q1FY27 results may appear weak due to the sharp decline in reported profit. However, a deeper analysis suggests that the decline was largely caused by a one-time legal settlement expense rather than deterioration in the bank's core business.

The bank continued to deliver healthy growth in Net Interest Income, deposits, advances, and overall business, while further improving its asset quality. Although Net Interest Margins moderated slightly, the overall operating performance remained resilient.

With a strong balance sheet, improving credit quality, healthy capital position, and continued expansion in domestic and international operations, Bank of Baroda appears well-positioned for sustainable long-term growth. Investors are likely to focus on the bank's underlying business momentum and future profitability rather than the temporary impact of this quarter's exceptional expense.
